Finnhamn - The full year

Welcome to Finnhamn, the island of the four seasons, in the archipelago of Stockholm!

Finnhamn is a group of larger and smaller islands. Idholmen is dominated by three hills with surrounding farmlands. Stora Jolpan, the name of the main island, is dominated by two eminences. The flat rocks surrounding the Youth Hostel are especially developed. In the lowlands there are nutritious and calcium-rich soil which was cultivated for a long time.

Söder Långholm constitutes almost only of flat rocks with the highest point approximately 20 meters above the sea. The central parts of Särsö consists partially of farmlands in area of Ladviken and in the middle of the island flat rocks with Utsiktsberget, which is also almost 20 meters high. Finally, Fjärdholm, is a mainly woodlands with no great areas of flat rocks.

On the islands there is mainly flat-rock-pine-woods. The barren environment makes good hunting grounds for eagle owl, who regularly visits Finnhamn. De lower areas on the islands are lush with calcium-rich soil. In the verges to more open lands there are groves with for example hazel, orchids and herbs. The grove-flora in the more fertile environments also consists of some rare species. On some of the islands there is quite a lot of oak-trees.

Finding your way around

Finding your way around is easy since there are comfortable grave-roads. If you walk from the harbour to Idholmen you will pass the Camping before arriving to the Cottage Village, both having beaches close by. Groceries can be bought in the store which is open during the summer, this might suit you that stays in one of the cottages, camping or in the Youth Hostel.

History

The name Finnhamn descends from the time when Finish ships sailed with cargo to and from Stockholm and harboured here. The main building on Finnhamn was built as a summer manor for coal-dealer Mr. Rönström around 1915. In 1943 the City of Stockholm bought Finnhamn as the first "recreation reservation" which according to the City's plan was going to save it from being sold to private interests. From 1998 Finnhamn belongs to Skärgårdsstiftelsen.

Originally Finnhamn was only the harbour on Stora Jolpan. The name is easily traced, Finish ships bringing firewood to and from Stockholm sailed through Husaröleden. Nowadays Finnhamn is the generic term for a group of islands consisting of Stora Jolpan, Lilla Jolpan and Idholmen.

On the top of the outlook by the Youth Hostel stands the chimney to the Rönström-yacht Mavournen, a landmark for sailors today and a monument over a long gone cognac-scenting archipelago-epoch.

The agriculture work on islands ended in 1940, but the open landscape scenery has been kept due to hay-making and clearing. You can still enjoy the archipelagos famous flower meadows and leaf-halls walking through Finnhamn. And now Idholmens Farm is bringing the fields back to life.

Since 1998 Finnhamn is owned by Skärgårdsstiftelsen in the county of Stockholm. From 1999 we try to work as environmental-friendly as possible. We are therefore active with clearing the woods, composting and keeping animals in order to preserve the unique environment in the archipelago for the future.

Idholmen Farm

The agricultural work has been resting for many decades. In 1999 it was brought back to life and now the land is cultivated once again. There are some animals as well, such as cows (Aberdeen Angus), pigs and chickens. When we cook we use as many local products as possible, a lot comes from Idholmen Farm. For example, the eggs served on the breakfast buffet comes from the chicken Agda and her sisters on the other side of the island. Idholmen Farm has a shop in which they sell eggs, fresh vegetables, oils, vinegars, preserved fruits and vegetables. mailto:widholmen@finnhamn.se
