Gräddö is a community on Rådmansö east of Norrtälje at the estuary of Norrtäljeviken (bay). Kvarnudden was the home base for the Stockholm squadron during the Second World War. Now there is a restaurant with a beautiful view over Norrtäljeviken. A midsummer pole is also raised here during festivities every year. Every year Rådmansödagen is celebrated here. To the north of Gräddö is the island of Lidö. Here there is a restaurant, a conference centre and a Swedish Tourist Association hostel.

How to Get There
You can get to Gräddö by road. You take E18 to Kapellskär and turn off to Södersvik-Gräddö. There is a good guest harbour in the bay for visiting boats.

Nature
Gräddö is nearly the most easterly point on Rådmansö, to the east of Norrtälje. Lidö is the nearest island and Havssvalget just further out towards Ålands Hav (the Sea of Åland).

History
Historically, Gräddö was a significant fishing village and harbour in the age of sailing ships. During the 18th century the Russians landed on Rådmansö and ravaged the area. Around 1900, Gräddö was the home harbour for the typical Roslagen sailboats and wood and sand freight boats. Like many other areas of the Stockholm Archipelago, summer visitors became the main source of income and guest houses flowered during the 1920s and 30s. Just before the Second World War there were no fewer than 5 guest houses in little Gräddö. Waxholmbsolaget's flagship, "Norrtelje", serviced the route Stockholm-Norrtälje for many years and Gräddö was one of the large steam boat piers on the route. SS Norrtelje is now permanently berthed in Norrtälje Harbour and is a restaurant, open all year round.

During the Second World War, the Stockholm squadron was based here. There are inscriptions on the rocks at Kvarnudden commemorating this. In 1959, Viking Line started a scheduled service to Åland from Gräddö's steamboat pier. The increased boat traffic required better berthing facilities and in 1962, a new pier was built on Gräddöviken's (bay) eastern coast including a customs station. The ferry traffic to Åland has now moved to Kapellskär.
