Grisslehamn

Latitud: N 60º 6' 8.82"

Grisslehamn is the main population centre on the long and narrow island of Väddö. It is 110 km north of Stockholm and has been the gateway to the Sea of Åland down through the centuries. The ferry goes to Eckerö from here and it is the shortest distance to Åland from the Swedish mainland. There are fish shops and cafés around the old fishing harbour. The post used to go from here to Åland and every year there is Postrodden (the postal rowing competition) to Eckerö to commemorate this. If you want to take a cycle trip in and around Grisslehamn, you can rent bicycles from Grisslehamn's Marina. You can also rent bicycles and canoes at Väddö Vital near Älmsta. North of Grisslehamn is Singö. Here you can ride Iceland ponies. The conference centre, Hotell Havsbaden, was built in 1903 and offers tranquil views over the sea and harbour. It is the best hotel in the town and they arrange a large number of activities like writer's afternoons, fishing trips, trips to the archipelago, canoeing and more.

There is a guest harbour in the main fishing harbour and there is also a guest harbour in the marina in the bay on the other side of the island attached to the campsite.

The painter, illustrator and author, Albert Engström, lived here from the start of the 20th century and there is a museum in the harbour where you may see a lot of his works. A bit further out you can find his art studio on the rocks looking out over the sea.

Nature
Grisslehamn is at the northern end of Väddö which is separated from the mainland by a long canal passing through Älmsta. This was constructed during the middle of the 19th century when the rising of the land led to difficulties navigating the channel. The Sea of Åland lies to the east of Grisslehamn. To the north is the woody island of Singö...

History
Due to its location as the nearest outpost towards Åland, the town has been a centre for the handling of the mail to Finland. Historical documents mention rowing the post over the sea as early as 1376. The oldest postal house in the country stands here and was built in 1755. During the war against Russia in 1809, Russians crossed the ice and invaded Grisslehamn. Enemy troops landing so close to the capital hastened the development of events that led to Sweden losing Finland as part of its territory. Rowing the post stopped at the start of the 20th century and the population supported themselves from hunting and fishing until the arrival of summer residents started the tourist industry going. The impressive Havsbaden was built as early as 1903 and today, it is a four star hotel.

In 1900, the artist, Albert Engström, visited Grisslehamn for the summer. He felt comfortable with the brusque Roslagen folk and stayed. A lot of famous friends came to visit his home and studio, including Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, August Strindberg and Bruno Liljefors.
