Ljusterö is one of the middle archipelago's largest islands and you can get there from the mainland by taking the car ferry from Östanå. Västra and Östra Lagnö is a peninsula on northern Ljusterö. Östra Lagnö is a nature reserve and a well-liked destination in genuine Roslag countryside with wonderful rocks and fabulous views of the outer archipelago.

The countryside of the archipelago means that people continue to move to the island, summer residents become permanent residents and services on the island are good. There is pre-school and primary school, a post office, shops and restaurants. Health care and care for the elderly on Ljusterö is also good.

There are a lot of pastime activities available on the island, including golf, tennis, hunting and shooting sports along with boating and swimming.

How to get there
You can get to Ljusterö by Waxholmsbolaget boat from Strömkajen in Stockholm to Linanäs pier on the western side of the island and a number of piers on the southeastern part. SL bus number 626 also goes here from Danderyd. If you travel by car, take route 276 to Östanå and then the car ferry, which goes every half hour.

Nature
Ljusterö is mainly made up of a lightly rolling landscape with woodland mixed with cultivated fields and grazing land. There are a total of 15 inland lakes. The highest point is Ljusterö Huvud on the southern part of the island and it is 52 metres high. There is rich fauna including hares, foxes, badgers, deer and elk. There are also several sea eagle nests. 

History  
Building on Ljusterö dates back more than 2000 years. There is a total of 8 graveyards on the island. The name is said to come from the southern headlands which look like a fishing spear (ljuster). The population lived mainly on fishing, hunting, farming and livestock. There are many preserved areas from the 18th century. Stockholm residents discovered Ljusterö towards the end of the 19th century and the island has been a classic summer paradise since then for Stockholm residents for several generations. Artists like Albert Engström, Verner von Heidenstam and Bruno Liljefors often visited Ljusterö. There are 1500 permanent residents on the island today.
