Nämdö

Lat: N 59º 11' 52.01"
Long: E 18º 41' 29.91"

Nämdö lies in the middle of the Stockholm Archipelago to the east of Värmdö. It is 14 square kilometres, surrounded by its own archipelago consisting of hundreds of rocks and skerries. Nämdö is a living archipelago community with several villages, a school, a church, agriculture and approximately 30 companies offering everything from fish farming to IT services. Around 100 people live on Nämdö and the surrounding islands.

In Sand, on the southeastern side, there is a school where the local children can go all the way up to 3rd year in secondary school. There is also a local museum here, Hembygdsgården (the homestead), a crafts cottage and post office. Just north of Sand is Solvik, which has Nämdö Kök & Bar (food and drink) and a shop where you can also buy fuel.

The best way to discover the nature of inland Nämdö is by bicycle or on foot. There are nice gravel roads and paths and there are no cars on the island. The beautiful archipelago around the island offers varied habitats, with rich bird and animal life on Nämdö and even out on the three large islands, Bullerö, Långviksskär and Biskopsö which lie on the outer extremity towards the sea, surrounded by rocks.

Accommodation is available in the form of Bed and Breakfast on Nämdö and Rögrund. On Idö in the northeast is Idöborgs Konferens & Retreat (conference centre).

Nature
Nämdö's coastline in the north and west is high and forested while the areas towards the outer archipelago are clearand low. Most of the buildings are concentrated on the eastern side. There is active agriculture on the island since the 1980s and the landscape is kept open by grazing livestock. There are several rare plants on the island, including several species of orchid. In the inland woodland you can find elk, roe deer and badgers. There is also a large group of fallow deer here. They were introduced to the neighbouring island of Rågskär in the 1960s and they have spread since then. The island is also a nesting area for buzzards and ospreys. You can also see impressive sea eagles, which glide in over Nämdö from the bird sanctuaries in the area.

The Nämdö archipelago is spread out around the main island of Nämdö. It consists of around a hundred islands, rocks and skerries in Nämdöfjärden and Jungfrufjärden to the south of Runmarö down to Mörtö Bunsö. Towards the sea off Nämdö are some of the middle archipelago's most beautiful islands like Biskopsö, Bullerö, Gillinge, Jungfruskär and Långviksskär.

History
Nämdö is named in writings from the 13th century in king Valdemar Seir's description of the sea route along the Swedish coast to Reval in Estonia. The island was probably inhabited earlier even if there are no definite remains to be found.

In the 16th century there were eight tax-registered farmers here. Östanvik was the largest farm, to which many of the surrounding homesteads paid their dues.

In the summer of 1719 nearly the entire island was burnt down by the Russians. The old Östanvik farm was rebuilt to the south of the original farm after the ravages and the 18th century house with its garden and avenue can still be seen today. The new Östanvik farm was built at the start of the 20th century near Östanvik's pier.

The population of Nämdö was at its highest at the end of the 19th century with 321 people in the parish. There are approximately 100 permanent residents today. There are several thousand inhabitants during the summer. At the beginning of the 1960s, Stockholm city bought large areas of Nämdö and Uvö. This land has been owned by Skärgårdsstiftelsen since 1998.
