Nynäshamn
Lat: N 58º 54' 4.74"

Nynäshamn is a real archipelago town lying nearly at the end of the large peninsula, Södertörn. There are about 25,000 people living in the whole municipality and the town is dominated by the large harbour where oil tankers rub shoulders with boats from the archipelago, pleasure boats and the large car ferries to Gotland, Russia, Germany and Poland. You can also use the scheduled ferry service to the nearby larger islands of Ålö, Rånö and Nåttarö to the south of Utö and also directly to the national park, Gotska Sandön.
In the large guest harbour, there is room for 200 pleasure boats. Around this harbour you find cafés and bars with sun decking, smokeries, arts and crafts shops and antique shops in small red cottages. If you want to live the life of the mainland, the whole of the rolling Södertörn landscape stretches to the north with riding paths, beautiful cycling tracks and golf courses.
Nynäshamn is one of the best areas of the archipelago for fishing. You can catch really large salmon here. It is also a very popular spot for divers from all over Sweden who search the water and reefs where there are many shipwrecks.
The proximity of the sea characterises the town. The open sea lies outside the harbour and Stockholm Archipelago's southern outpost, Landsort, lies to the south. You can see the large lighthouse here from 20 nautical miles. One of the archipelago's most important pilot stations is at Landsort and there is a bird observatory there where many passing birds are ring marked and observed every year. In 2007, there were nearly 300 species observed here.
To the south of Nynäshamn are Järflottalandet and Torö with its unique stony beach. Torö has been a favourite for windsurfers because of high waves and strong winds. This is also one of the few places in Sweden where you can see people wave surfing.

Nature
The landscape to the north of the town is Södertörnslandet consisting of farms and woodland. The actual town faces the sea to the east and including the surrounding islands there are around 1000 kilometres of coastline in total. There are 1852 islands in the Nynäshamn archipelago.
History
The first traces of people in the area date from 4500 BC. The lowest areas were below sea level then and the landscape of Södertörn was typical of the archipelago with a lot of fish, seals and seabirds. Today, Nynäshamn is the Stockholm Archipelago's largest harbour and ships have set sail and landed here since the Viking Age. There has been a lighthouse at Landsort since the 17th century and the existing lighthouse is the oldest in Sweden. There are many burial grounds and rune stones including one that tells of the largest Viking campaigns to the east, that of Ingvar the Far-Travelled who went to the Serkland in today's Russia.
The actual town was built relatively recently. The land was bought by the city of Stockholm from Nynäs Säteri (farm) (which was here since the Middle Ages) at the end of the 19th century. Stockholm needed a harbour to the open sea and Nynäshamn was a natural choice because of its protected location and sea that didn't freeze during the winter. The railway was built here for transport to the harbour and at the same time a company was established for building homes and industry. Ferry traffic was an important aspect of the business of the town right from the start and scheduled services to and from Gotland celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2008.
It was always the intention to create a seaside town. On the island of Trehörningen, a spa hotel and casino was built. The sailing for the Stockholm Olympics in 1912 went from here and the popular Strandvägen was especially built for spectators with its broad sea view. The church on the hill above the harbour was built in 1930 and Nynäshamn officially became a town in 1947. Natur
