Tynningö

Tynningö lies across the water from Waxholm, south of Rindö. It is a narrow island, more than 10 km long with approximately 400 permanent residents. The population more than doubles during the summer. The island has been owned by noblemen down the years and has been awarded as payment for services on several occasions. For example, it was presented to the citizens of Stockholm on one occasion after they had opened the city gates for Engelbrekt so he could drive out the Danes from the capital in 1436.

Tynningö today has beautiful countryside, and is easy to get around by bicycle or on foot with its lovely rambling walks. There is a country store, a pub serving lunches and take-away food, a boatyard, a kindergarten and one of the nicest conference facilities in the archipelago, Ljungbergsgården.

At the end of November or beginning of December each year a Christmas bazaar is held next to the shop and the pub. Several societies have midsummer celebrations on the island. Please note that there is limited parking on the island. Five minutes from the car ferry across the straight on Värmdö is Nacka Golf Club.

- Tynningö klack is the highest point on the island with a view over the archipelago.-

- Myrholmsmaren (lake) is very nice for swimming.

History
The name, Tynningö, has been used since the Viking Age. In the 16th century during the reign of Erik XIV there was a royal farm on the island and in the 17th century Queen Kristina built a hunting lodge here. Between the end of the 17th century and throughout the 18th century, the ownership of the island changed often within the circle of noblemen and in 1660 the island became a country estate which, according to the regulations of the time, should be owned by a nobleman and be appropriately built and the land should be well looked after. There is still an 18th century wing remaining from the manor. During the 19th century the island was divided into smaller peasant farms and in the beginning of the 20th century the holdings were divided up even more to create plots for holiday homes.
