Safety
As a pleasure sailor in the Stockholm Archipelago you can enjoy the great natural surroundings and salt drenched adventures. If your boat trip becomes a bit too exciting, if you have engine problems or someone on board is sick then it is nice to know that emergency services function.
The Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) is responsible for sea rescue with responsibility to save human life at sea. Sea rescue is conducted in co-operation with national, municipal and individual organisations. Included in these organisations are the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Coast Guard, Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS) and the Swedish Police Service. There are also some independent players like Sjöassistans (Sea Rescue), with 600 boats and 430 mechanics, who can help in case of emergency.
Call the emergency number 112 for sea rescue or on channel 16 on VHF.
Sjöassistans telephone 020-98 90 00 is manned 24 hours a day.
Sjöassistans is a service and safety organisation for people who want to get more out of boating life. We help more pleasure boat owners in Swedish waters than any other organisation every year, with non-life threatening problems. Along with Stockholm Radio, we are the hub of service at sea for pleasure boats.
Take action as follows in order of priority if you have an emergency or identify someone who needs help:
1. Try to solve the problem yourself with available equipment.
2. Seek help from other boats in the area.
3. Contact the sea rescue authorities.
